Varietals
Montepulciano
A red grape found throughout central and southern Italy. Noted for its concentration in Abruzzi.
A deeply colored wine – smooth and very drinkable.
Pairs well with: mutton skewers, and kebab.
Sangiovese
Famous as one of the grapes in the Italian chianti blend, Sangiovese is a part of the super Tuscan blends as well as Brunello.
Light-bodied, fruity, and great flavor.
Pairs well with: hard cheeses, cured sausages, and roasted meats.
Cabernet
Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s most popular red wine grape varieties due both to ease of cultivation and consistency of varietal characteristics. Deep, dark fruit with a full mouth-feel laced with chocolate and tones of cedar make this a rich and elegant wine.
Pairs well with: meatballs or beef tagliata.
Aglianico
A black grape found largely in the Capania and Basilicata regions of Italy. This wine is firm, full bodied with rich flavors. A very agreeable wine, full-bodied with firm tannins and high acidity for excellent aging potential.
Pairs well with: lamb.
Nebbiolo
A red grape from Piemonte and Asti, as well as throughout north western Italy. The name is derived from the word nebbia, meaning fog.
A great wine that changes characteristics as it ages. Nebbiolo is the grape used to produce Barolo and Barbaresco by law.
Pairs well with: pasta with shaved white truffles, beef braised in red wine.
Fiano
A white grape found mostly in southern Italy. The name of this grape is derived from Appia near Avellino.
Great bouquet and flavors – a rich wine.
Pairs well with: fish and shellfish, feta, gouda and majorero
Barbera
A red grape – the third most cultivated variety in Italy. Originated in the hills of Monferrato. Widely found in the Asti region of Italy. The wine is an approachable, medium bodied, displaying well balanced acidity and juicy, round fruit flavors.
Pairs well with: grill pork and wild boar.
Negroamaro
A black, red grape native to southern Italy. It is grown almost exclusively in Puglia and Salento. This grape dates back 1500 years.
This wines has a deep color, is earthy and fruity. The name means blackbitter and has a velvety and agreeable nature.
Pairs well with: antipasto, pepperonata stew.
Sagrantino
Sagrantino di Montefalco is from the hills of Umbria between Perugia and Spoleto.
A dry, fruity red wine – very agreeable – deep in color.
Pairs well with: hearty stew, wild game, polenta and braised meats.
Schioppettino
Native to Fruili-Venezia in the north east of Italy.
Medium bodied, deeply colored, spicy on the pallet.
Dates back to the 13th century.
Pairs well with: Parmigiano Reggiano
Primitivo
Known as Zinfandel in California and Tribidrag in its home of Croatia, Primitivo has spread around the world, but is found predominantly in Puglia. A full bodied, fruity red wine.
Pairs well with: spaghetti and meatballs.
Biancolella
A light grape from the island of Ischia. Ischia was the birthplace of our paternal grandmother, Filomena.
A bright, fresh and fruity wine.
Pairs well with: tuna carpaccio, spring garden salad
